With users mainly complaining about battery life, ASUS has been bringing about multiple iterations of their power-saving features, and with the latest update they introduced a complete overhaul of the power-saving system. This was initially available as an update for the ZenFone 2, but it's now available for the majority of the ZenFone line-up, including ZenFones 5, 6, 2 Laser and Selfie.

Before, there were four power-saving battery modes. Now there are five: Performance, Normal, Power Saving, Super Saving, and Customized.

Performance

This mode provides the highest CPU performance and screen brightness, but also the shortest battery life. Very useful for heavy multitasking sessions but a disaster for standby and screen-on time. ASUS recommends this mode for gaming and online video streaming.

Normal

This was the old Balanced mode. This smartly adjusts CPU performance and brightness according to the users’ needs and the ambient lighting. As the name suggests, this mode is recommended for normal smartphone usage.

Power Saving

This mode claims to double that of what you get with Normal. Data connection and Wi-Fi networks are disabled when the display is turned off, and online notifications will only be received one the device is awake, at which point the networks will automatically reconnect. It also smartly adjusts CPU performance and brightness, similar to Normal.

Super Saving

This mode is like a very strict Power Saving mode: it disables everything except Phone, SMS and alarms. No data networks or Wi-Fi connections (turning either one auto-switches to Power Saving). This is specially made to extend standby time when the device is asleep for long periods of time, or when the battery is low.

Customized

My personal favourite. This mode enables you to customize and fine-tune power-saving settings such as CPU, brightness and network settings. You can also enable Extend Standby, which will disable notifications push for all apps, except those you allow.

Auto-switching to a specific battery mode has been relocated to the new Smart Switch tab. This tab features switching battery modes by battery level or by schedule. A new feature is the ability to auto-switch to any battery mode on schedule, not just Power Saving.

Bonus tip: Just in case you did not know, you can hide the orange color of the notifications bar when on Super Saving by tapping on the menu button on the Power Saver app and disabling Hint of Super-saving mode.

Thanks for this Nikko. A very clear explanation of the power saving modes. With my usage, I'm pretty much ok with the Normal mode, with the ZE551ML still reaching 6hrs SOT on WiFi with my usual app-heavy use.

The bug is there in power saving app, u can feel that if u follow these steps: 1. Switch to super saving mode 2. Now close all apps from recent app menu Or After step 1 click on the notification that appears U are likely to detect bug if u open power saving app after performing above mentioned steps   in zenfone 5
